Politicians, military personnel, and settlers from the United States believed that they had the right - perhaps even a duty - to expand the borders of the country into the west. During the early nineteenth century free white people translated this belief into a range of different policies, influenced by the their political, religious, and cultural priorities, including battles over slavery.
